VOCABULARY: Words related to conflict
Hostage …. A person who is captured or held prisoner by a person or a group
Pension…... An amount of money paid regularly to sb who is consider to be old or sick/ill to work
Betrayal= the fact of giving information about sb/sth to an enemy or to be betrayed.
Formerly………. In the past
To force…To compel = to make sb or sth do something that they do not want to do.
To recruit = to find new people to join a company, an organization, an armed force…
To settle........To put an end to an argument or a disagreement
Discrimination.... The fact of treating sb less fairly than others
LANGUAGE FUNCTION expressing opposite meaning
❶- We can use IN- UN- and DIS to make words with opposite meanings.
EX: Injustice – Ingratitude – Unarmed – Unhappy – Disrespect – Dishonor.
❷- For linking sentences and ideas we can use however and instead.
However is used with an adjective or adverb to mean ‘to whatever degree’ It is also a way of saying ‘BUT’. EX: they fought in the same wars together. They were not treated equally.(However)
They fought in the same wars together; however they were not treated equally.
Instead means’’ in the place of somebody or something.’’ EX: the general used the French army to attack the Tirailleurs Sénégalais. He did not help them. (Instead)
Instead of helping the Tirailleurs Sénégalais, the general used the French army to attack them.
EX2: the general used the French army to attack the Tirailleurs Sénégalais instead of helping them.
NB: we can use them in different places in the sentences (Use OF + gerund after instead. Do not use a negative)
