ENGLISH QUESTION TAGS
I - EXPLANATION

The question Tag is the question that is asked After saying something to confirm if it's true or false. In french we can say " n'est-ce pas ? "
The general formula used by many people is " isn't it ? " .
There are specifique elements that we use for English Question Tag, let's find them.
( Auxiliaries, not , subject ).
As we defined it we cannot make the question tag without sentences. It's because something has been said, that we want to know if it's true or false.
*** RULE 1  When the sentence is in affirmative form, we put the question tag into negative form. And when the sentence is in negative form , we put the question tag into affirmative form.
For example:
Firstly, if there is the word " not " in the sentence it means that the sentence is in negative form, so we remove the word " not " for having an affirmative form, then we use this form for the question tag.
Secondly, if there isn't nor the word "not " neither other words that express negation , for instance " ever, never, no more, any more, none etc , then we add " not " in the question tag.

NB. What we have to keep in our mind , is that if the given sentence is in affirmative form, then we put the question tag into negative form. But if the given sentence is in negative form, we put the question tag into affirmative form, it means we remove the word " not " or other words that express negation.

II - APPLICATION

1-  ELEMENTS WE NEED OR TAKE INTO
ACCOUNT IN THE QUESTION TAG.

Auxiliaries ( be , have, do )  , Subject ( replaced by a personal pronoun Subject) , not , question mark ( ? ).
NB It is important to replace the nouns by personal pronouns Subject, make sure you do not forget the question mark and to apply the  contraction with not and the auxiliary.

A- CONTRACTION.

( To be ) am not = ain't. is not = isn't. are not = aren't. was not = wasn't . were not = weren't.
( To have ) have not = haven't. has not = hasn't . had not = hadn't.
 ( To do ) do not = don't. does not = doesn't. did not = didn't.
( Will ) will not = won't.
( Would ) would not = wouldn't.
( Must ) must not = mustn't.
 ( May ) may not = mayn't.

B - NOUNS TURNED INTO PERSONAL PRONOUNS.

For instance : Koffi = (  He ) because Koffi is a boy, a mâle person .  Mariam = ( she ) because Mariam is a girl, a female person. The dog =( it ) because the dog is an animal. The table = ( it ) because the table is a thing. Mariam and Koffi = ( they ) because Mariam and Koffi together represent the third person of plurial form.
FORMULA 1 : (  auxiliary or modal + not + Subject + ? )
Example : Koffi is nice. We can also say " He is nice "
Q.T. = is not Koffi ? = is not He ? =  isn't he ?
Koffi's nice = isn't he ?
Mariam has a red pen.
Q.T. has not Mariam ?  = has not She ? = hasn't She ?
Mariam has a red pen. = hasn't She ?
FORMULA II -  ( Auxiliary or modal + Subject + ? ) Without not or other words expressing negation.
2 - EXAMPLE :
Ain't a bad boy.
Q.T. am I ?

NB : ain't = I am not . So we follow the formula by removing " not " and it remains " I am "  as it's a question we inverse the places ;  auxiliary before Subject and we have " am I " .

Ex 2 : the children did the same thing Yesterday.
Q.T.  = didn't they ?

We can explain by this example that the children can be replaced by the personal pronoun Subject " they " and as the sentence is in affirmative form, then we put the question tag into negative form by adding not to the auxiliary and contract them.
Children = they.
They did the same thing Yesterday.
Did # did not,    did # didn't.
They didn't the same thing Yesterday.
Q.T. didn't they ?

NB. For all the other verbs which are nor " auxiliaries "  neither  " modals " use the auxiliary " do "  with the same tense of the verb for the question tag
Example : to eat, to go , to learn, to make etc .
The dog eats some meats.

Question Tag : doesn't It ?

1) As the dog is an animal, we uqe " It " to replace it.

2) As the verb" to eat " is not an auxiliary, we use "  do " to replace it.

3) As the verb " to eat " is in present simple tense, we put " do " into present simple tense too, and we conjugate it with the same personal pronoun.

4) As the sentence is in affirmative form, we add " not " to put it into negative form.

5) As it is a question, we won't forget to put the question mark at the end of the question tag.
This is what gives :
DOESN'T IT ?  as answer.
Remember what we said in the last lesson, the auxiliary do is used to ask questions, answer questions and make sentences. For example the sentence " The dog eats some meats "  and the sentence The " dog does eat some meats " are the same. So as we need auxiliary to make the question tag and " do " is an auxiliary conjugated into present simple tense with the third personal pronoun Subject " it " that can replace the dog, then we use " does " instead of " do " .

Comment répondre aux questions en anglais

juillet 18, 2018

Comment répondre aux questions en Anglais ?
Il est parfois difficile pour certaines personnes de pouvoir répondre aux questions en anglais surtout lorsqu'on ne comprend pas la question.
En anglais tout comme dans plusieurs langues au monde, les questions sont posées à l'aide des mots interrogatifs , des auxiliaires etc suivant une structure particulière.
Dans cette leçon, nous vous présenterons les différents types de questions et comment il faut s'y prendre pour donner des réponses fiables et efficaces.
I - W.H QUESTIONS
The W.H. QUESTIONS are questions that begin by the interrogative words, generally starting by W or H. For instance :
( W ) : What ,  Who, When, Why, Where, Whom, Whose...

( H ) : How, How many, How far, How often, How long, How + to be, How Old ...
( Les questions commençant par les mots interrogatifs débutant par W ou H sont appelés W.H. QUESTIONS. )
Les règles sont les suivantes :
Il faut connaître la signification de ces mots. Ceux-ci sont :
What = quoi, que, qu' quel (le)  " utilisé pour les choses, objets et animaux " .
Who   =   qui. " Utilisé pour des personnes " .
Where  =   où. " Indique un lieu " .
When  =  quand. " Indique une période, un temps, un moment " .
Why  =  pourquoi . " Indique une cause " .
Whom  =  à qui. " Indique une personne bien précise de qui l'on parle" .
Whose  =  à qui.  " Stipulant sur quelques choses appartenant à quelqu'un " .
How  =  comment. " Indique l'état de quelques choses ou de quelqu'un. "
How many  =  combien de. Questionner sur le nombre pour une réponse à nombre quantitatif" Donner un nombre précis ou encore qu'on peut compter. Par exemple 2 , 100, 65390 etc.
How much  =  combien de.  ( Questionner sur le nombre pour une réponse sur des choses indénombrables )
How long  =  combien de temps. Stipule sur le temps mis.
How far  =  quelle est la distance. Questionner sur la distance.
How + to be  =  comment aller. C'est vrai que " to be " est le verbe être et que si on traduit littéralement " How + to be " on a "  comment être " mais il ne faut pas faire cette erreur car " How + to be " est utilisé pour poser des questions sur l'état de santé de quelqu'un et veut dire comment va ( comment aller )
How Old  =  quel âge. Questionner sur l'âge de quelqu'un.
How often  =  combien de fois. Questionner sur le nombre de fois.

Explication et exemple de phrase.
What is your name ?
Voici une question posée. Pour répondre à ce genre de question il faut se baser d'abord sur le mot interrogatif " what " qui veut dire  "quoi , que , qu' , quel (le) . Se focaliser sur le verbe " is " qui est le verbe "  être " en français conjugué à la troisième personne du singulier, puis le reste de la phrase qui n'est pas non plus à négliger.
Essayons alors de traduire, de savoir ce qu'on nous demande puis proposons une réponse à la question posée.
What = quelle,  is = est,  your = ton / ta , name = nom.
On a : Qu : What is your name ? .. Rep:  my name is Mr Tetchi.
Qu : Who is Mr Tetchi ?   Rep : Mr Tetchi is Zoé's father. ( Qui est Mr Tetchi ? ) Mr Tetchi est le père de Zoé.
Qu : Where does Ali come from ?   Rep: Ali does come from Korhogo, ou Ali comes from Korhogo.
Qu : How many président are there in côte d'Ivoire ? Rep : there are two ( 02 ) presidents.

LESSON 2   CIRCUMCISION
Session 1 Reading
Listen, and then read this extract from long walk to Freedom, the autobiography of Nelson Mandela.

It is a Xhosa custom that a boy only becomes a man after he is circumcised. When I was 16, justice and I made our way to two grass huts on the banks of the Mbashe River, together with 24 other boys. The night before the circumcision, women came from nearby village. Together we sang and danced into the night.
When the sun came up, we bathed in cold water. At midday, dress in blankets, we stood in two lines, watched from a distance by parents and relatives. When the drum started beating, we sat down with our legs spread out in front of us.
The old ingcibi ❶ raised his assegai ❷, and with a single blow changed each of us, in turn, from boys into men. As the pain shot through our loins, we cried: ‘ Ndiyindola!’ (‘I am a man!)
Afterwards, the amakhankatha – the guardian – explained to us the rules of entering manhood. We stayed in the huts until our wounds healed.
After the circumcision, there was a ceremony and I was given my circumcision name, Dalibhunga.
❶ Ingcibi: a circumcision expert.
❷ Assegai: a spear

                                 Vocabulary:              words related to initiation

To bathe........................... To have a bath. Or to wash oneself in a bathroom.
Blanket ......................... a large cover, often made of wool used on bed to keep people warm.
Nearby ………………….. near in position, not far away.
Wound ……………………. An injury to part of the body especially one in which a hole is made in the skin using a weapon. Example ‘‘a knife wound’’

Language function: linking sentences with when, as and until

We are going to study these ways of linking sentences in the past tense.
When = lorsque         As = comme                 until = jusqu’a (ce que)
‘‘When’’ tells us the time at which something happened. The order of the clause can change.
Example: the sun came up. We bathed in cold water.
When the sun came, we bathe in cold water.
We bathe in cold water when the sun came.
‘‘As’’ describes two things that happen at the same time. The order of the clause can change.
Example: the pain shot through our loins. We cried. ‘Ndiyindola!’
As the pain shot through our loins, we cried, ‘Ndiyindola!’
We cried, Ndiyindola as the pain shot through our loins.
Until means happening at a certain time and then stopping.
Example: we stayed in the huts. Our wounds healed.
We stayed in the huts, until our wounds healed.

Activity one: join these sentences with the words in bracket.
1- The young men started to beat the drum. The sun came up. (when)
2- The visitor arrived. We served the first cup of strong tea. (when)
3- The boys shouted. They were circumcised. (as)
4- The people shouted. The young boys danced around the huts. (as)
5- He said he was not a man. He was circumcised. (until)
6- We waited. The last people left the party. (until)
